An Innovative Vessel for Research Studies at Amazon as a Potential Support for Sustainable Development and Conservation of the Region BABT
Meliande,Luís Otávio Vieira; Soares Filho,Afrânio de Amorim Francisco; Fonseca,Marcus Vinícius de Araújo; Miranda,Fernando Pellon de.
This study proposes an innovative and demonstrably necessary vessel intended for the research and logistic support of scientific or non-scientific activities in the Amazon, designed in accordance with the environmental and geographical requirements and characteristics of the region (possibly applicable to other similar hydrographic basins). The study also demonstrates the existence of a demand (actual and potential) for the infrastructure proposed. This infrastructure could subsidize the efforts devoted to the expansion of knowledge about the region, since many areas of science, institutions and business segments could benefit from its implementation. The access to knowledge could attract private investments with the perspective of developing business...

An ordination technique for fish diet comparisons BABT
Penczak,Tadeusz; Agostinho,Angelo A.; Hahn,Norma S..
The frequency of nine food types in the guts of 58 fish species from the Paraná River and its floodplain was compared using similarity definition. A synthetic table ordered on the basis of this definition, with fish species on axis y, and food types on axis x, enabled easy reading numerous kinds of information on feeding ecology of fish in the catchment. For example: 1) which fish species were generalists, specialists or opportunists, 2) those classified as herbivorous species consumed small amounts of animal food, 3) that fish consumed any food type that contained transformed solar energy and matter, 4) what are food preferences dependent on fish taxonomic affinity. The possibility of employing synthetic tables for investigating spatial and temporal...

An outbreak of winter dysentery caused by bovine coronavirus in a high-production dairy cattle herd from a tropical country BABT
Takiuchi,Elisabete; Barry,Aline Fernandes; Alfieri,Alice Fernandes; Filippsen,Patrícia; Alfieri,Amauri Alcindo.
Bovine coronavirus (BCoV) is a known cause of winter dysentery (WD) in adult cattle. The morbidity of the disease is high, that results in a significant decrease in milk production and consequently, economic losses. In the present study, we report on a classical outbreak of WD that affected a high-production Holstein dairy herd raised in a tropical country. The lactating batch included 154 cows, and 138 (90%) presented diarrhea in a short (nine days) period of time. Three (2%) cows died. The other batches of animals did not become ill. The evolution of the disease in the herd, including the clinical signs and epidemiological features, strongly suggested a WD case. Semi-nested PCR and RFLP confirmed that BCoV was the cause of the infection. Samples tested...

An overview on molecular markers for detection of ochratoxigenic fungi in coffee neans BABT
Fungaro,Maria Helena Pelegrinelli; Sartori,Daniele.
Ochratoxin A (OTA) is one of the most abundant food-contaminating mycotoxins. Its occurrence in several agricultural commodities has been considered a worldwide problem. This toxin is mainly produced by Aspergillus species. OTA has nephrotoxic, immunosuppressive, and carcinogenic effects and consequently the contamination with this toxin represents a high risk for human and animal health. In the last 5 years, several investigators have applied molecular methods in order to develop PCR assays for identifying and quantifying OTA-producing fungi in coffee beans samples. The main objective is to allow the detection of microorganisms capable of producing OTA, preferentially prior to ochratoxin production and accumulation. In this contribution several of these...

Anaerobic biodegradability of dairy wastewater pretreated with porcine pancreas lipase BABT
Mendes,Adriano Aguiar; Pereira,Ernandes Benedito; Furigo Jr.,Agenor; Castro,Heizir Ferreira de.
Lipids-rich wastewater was partial hydrolyzed with porcine pancreas lipase and the efficiency of the enzymatic pretreatment was verified by the comparative biodegradability tests (crude and treated wastewater). Alternatively, simultaneous run was carried out in which hydrolysis and digestion was performed in the same reactor. Wastewater from dairy industries and low cost lipase preparation at two concentrations (0.05 and 0.5% w.v-1) were used. All the samples pretreated with enzyme showed a positive effect on organic matter removal (Chemical Oxygen Demand-COD) and formation of methane. The best results were obtained when hydrolysis and biodegradation were performed simultaneously, attaining high COD and color removal independent of the lipase...

Analysis of seven STR human loci for paternity testing by microchip electrophoresis BABT
Fraige,Karina; Travensolo,Regiane Fátima; Carrilho,Emanuel.
The aim of this work was to evaluate two paternity cases by microchip electrophoresis and the validation of the methodology by comparison of the results with those obtained in a commercial genetic analyzer. It was observed that when working with tetranucleotide regions, in which the minimal difference between the alleles was only four base pairs, the commercial microchip system did not present the resolution and repeatability needed. Nevertheless, the relative standard deviation was between 0 and 1.2% and the fragments detected were within the expected size ranges as described in the literature.

Analysis of solar photovoltaic energy potential in Brazilian hydroelectric reservoirs through floating panels BABT
Santos,Francielle da Rocha; Mariano,Juliana D’Angela; Sestrem Junior,Jonas Abilio; Urbanetz Junior,Jair.
Abstract Sustainability, a concept used to exploit natural resources without harming future generations, is being applied to power generation. In Brazil, the main source of electric energy comes from hydroelectric plants, due to abundant water resources. However, the implementation of these plants causes irreversible impacts on the environment and society. On the other hand, the impacts caused by photovoltaic panels are considerably smaller in the construction phase and zero in the operation phase. This article describes the impacts generated by hydroelectric power plants and gives an overview of the power generated by floating photovoltaic panels using 10% of the area of the reservoirs of the largest hydroelectric power plants in Brazil. The results...

Santos Júnior,José Araújo dos; Cardoso,Jorge João Ricardo Ferreira; Silva,Cleomacio Miguel da; Silveira,Suêldo Vita; Amaral,Romilton dos Santos.
Potassium-40 was determined in soil in an area with 40,000 m² situated in the western State of Pernambuco, Brazil. For radiometric measurements, the gamma spectrometry method with a high purity germanium (HPGe) detector was used. Sampling of 78 soil samples has been performed at intervals of 25 m. The specific activities of 40K were calculated based on the photopeak of 1.46 MeV. Values from 541 to 3,572 Bq kg-1 were obtained (mean of 1,827 Bq kg-1). These values allowed the determination of the elemental concentrations as well as the absorbed dose rates in air, 1 m above the ground. The values varied from 1.7 to 11.5% (mean of 6%) and from 23.4 to 154.3 nGy h-1 (mean of 79 nGy h-1), respectively.

Analysis of the Impacts of the Electrification of the Vehicle Fleet in the Electric Power System in Curitiba BABT
Brati,Rossetto, Matheus; Maria,Lourenço, Elizete.
ABSTRACT The Market share of electrical vehicles has been rising in the past few years and tends to rise even more. According to the International Energy Agency, an increase of 50% in the number of electrical vehicles is expected. Whilst that increase is beneficial from a greenhouse gases emissions drop point of view, that rise could, on the other hand, represent a major increase in the electrical power consumption. Besides, other problems such as harmonics and overloads could emerge from the massive connection of electrical vehicles to the electrical grid. Therefore, it is necessary to perform studies and simulations in order to estimate those problems and to mitigate the problems related to the inevitable expansion of the electric vehicle fleet in the...
